Google says the Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly users
The milestone is app-only, self-reported and arrives three weeks after Google told investors the figure was 950 million. The usage breakdown underneath it is the more interesting part.
Google said on 11 August that the Gemini app has passed 1 billion monthly users. CEO Sundar Pichai framed it on X as the company's fourteenth product to reach a billion. The announcement itself is a short post on Google's blog: one headline number, then a handful of usage statistics. All of it comes from Google, and none of it has been independently verified.
What the number counts, and what it does not
The post says that "more than 1 billion people are using the Gemini app every month" and calls Gemini the fastest-growing product in Google's history. It does not define what counts as a use, over what window, or how a person is deduplicated across devices. Pichai and the reporting that followed describe the figure as monthly active users; Google's own wording is looser than that.
The scope is also narrower than the headline suggests. TechCrunch reports that the figure covers the Gemini app specifically and excludes people reaching Google's models through other channels — most notably AI Mode in Search, which Google said crossed a billion monthly users of its own during the second quarter. Adding up Gemini's total reach across Search, Workspace and Android would produce a much larger and much less meaningful number. Counting the app alone is the more conservative choice, and it is the one Google made.
Against the trajectory, the jump is less dramatic than a round number implies. Google told investors on its Q2 2026 earnings call in July that the app had over 950 million monthly users, roughly triple the year before, after crossing 750 million in February. Passing a billion three weeks later continues a curve rather than breaking one. The milestone is the headline; the growth rate is the actual story.
What Google says people do with it
The usage breakdown is the more interesting half of the post, and it points somewhere specific: away from typing.
- 63% of users now talk directly to Gemini, including a growing group Google describes as "voice only". Parents are 43% more likely to use voice for everyday tasks.
- One in five Gemini Live interactions goes beyond voice into live camera feeds or screen sharing.
- 38% of the requests Google classifies as schoolwork arrive with an attachment.
- The app generates more than 150 million images a day.
- Gemini can automate actions across more than 40 Android apps.
- iOS accounts for more than 100 million active users, and Google says macOS power users prompt about twice as often as users on other surfaces.
These are Google's own figures, published without methodology, sample sizes, or a definition of a term like "power user". They are worth reading as directional rather than precise. The analytics firm Appfigures separately counted more than 137 million iOS downloads in the twelve months to July, which is at least consistent with the scale Google claims on Apple's platforms — though downloads and active users are not the same measurement.
The assistant market is now genuinely contested
TechCrunch reports that OpenAI's ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active users in June, two months ahead of Gemini. The two assistants are now in the same order of magnitude on broadly similar self-reported measures, which was not true a year ago. Sensor Tower's H1 2026 State of AI report, cited by TechCrunch in July, put ChatGPT's share of AI assistant usage below 50% for the first time, with Gemini at 27.7%.
None of this settles who is ahead. The metrics are not standardised, the reporting dates differ, and both companies choose which number to publish and when. What it does establish is that neither one can treat consumer distribution as a moat any more. Google arrived here substantially through placement — Gemini ships on Android and is promoted across Search and Workspace — and OpenAI arrived largely without that advantage. Those are two different kinds of billion, and the distinction matters more than the tie.
What changes if you build on this
The composition of the usage is more actionable than the total. If 63% of interactions are spoken and one in five Live sessions carries a camera feed or a shared screen, the median consumer prompt is increasingly not a typed sentence. It is speech with ambient noise in it, or a video frame with a question attached. Interfaces designed around clean text input are optimising for a shrinking share of how people actually address these systems.
The attachment figure points the same direction. If 38% of schoolwork requests arrive with a file, the default interaction is document-grounded rather than open-ended. That puts the weight on how well long-context retrieval handles user-supplied material, and less on prompt phrasing on its own.
For anyone deciding which ecosystem to build in, the useful reading is narrow but real: Gemini's consumer surface is no longer a smaller market than ChatGPT's. That is a distribution fact, not a capability claim, and it should not be mistaken for one. Nothing in this announcement says anything about how good the models are.
Why this matters
- Gemini and ChatGPT are now in the same order of magnitude on self-reported user counts, which undercuts the assumption that OpenAI owns consumer AI distribution.
- Google's own breakdown shows most interaction is now voice and multimodal rather than typed text, which changes what consumer AI interfaces should be designed around.
- Every figure comes from Google without methodology or independent audit, so this is a marketing disclosure rather than a verified metric.
Key takeaways
- Google said on 11 August that the Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly users; the figure covers the app only and excludes AI Mode in Search.
- Google reported over 950 million monthly users on its Q2 2026 earnings call in July, and 750 million in February.
- Google says 63% of users talk to Gemini, one in five Gemini Live sessions uses camera or screen sharing, and the app generates over 150 million images a day.
- TechCrunch reports ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active users in June; Sensor Tower put its share of assistant usage below 50% in H1 2026, with Gemini at 27.7%.
