The week ahead: KDD, USENIX Security, and one read on AI capex

Three items in the 9–15 August window have publicly confirmed dates, and none of them is a model launch. That is the honest shape of the week: two research conferences and one earnings call that doubles as a reading on AI infrastructure spending. We list what has an announced date attached to it, and nothing else.

What is confirmed

• Sunday 9 – Thursday 13 August — KDD 2026, ICC Jeju, Korea.
• Wednesday 12 – Friday 14 August — 35th USENIX Security Symposium, Baltimore, Maryland.
• Thursday 13 August — Applied Materials fiscal third quarter 2026 earnings call, 4:30 p.m. ET.

KDD runs through Thursday, with Jeff Dean opening the main program

KDD 2026 opened on Sunday with workshops and tutorials and continues in that format on Monday, according to the conference's published schedule at a glance. The main conference days run Tuesday through Thursday. Jeff Dean of Google gives the opening keynote on Tuesday morning, from 8:00 to 9:20 local time, followed by the conference's Korea Day track. Tuesday also carries the Test of Time and dissertation awards; Monday hosts a Finance special day.

KDD is an applied data mining and machine learning venue rather than a frontier model stage. The work presented there tends to be production systems and evaluation methodology, which is a different signal from a launch event, and often a more durable one.

USENIX Security opens Wednesday in Baltimore

The 35th USENIX Security Symposium runs 12–14 August at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. USENIX describes it as bringing together researchers, practitioners and system programmers working on the security and privacy of computer systems and networks. The early bird registration deadline has passed. We are not going to characterise the paper program here: the accepted papers page was unavailable when we checked, and we do not summarise research we have not read.

Applied Materials reports on Thursday

Applied Materials announced on 23 July that it will hold its fiscal third quarter 2026 earnings conference call on Thursday 13 August at 4:30 p.m. ET, webcast from its investor relations site, with a replay the same evening.

It belongs on an AI calendar for a specific reason. Applied Materials sells the equipment that fabs install before any chip exists, so its order book and its guidance are an earlier read on whether AI-driven capacity expansion is still accelerating than anything a model vendor will say. To be clear about what this is: a scheduled call, not a prediction of its contents. The company has not pre-announced results, and we are not forecasting them.

What is not on this list, and why

We found no publicly confirmed launch or general availability date from a major lab falling inside this window. Expectations circulate continuously — that a given lab is close to shipping a given model — but an expectation is not an event, and an unconfirmed date is not a date. Nothing gets a slot here on the strength of a rumour, a leak or an analyst's guess.

If a lab does announce something midweek, it will appear in the daily edition, dated to the day it actually happened rather than backfilled into this preview.

What changes for your work

Candidly, very little. Nothing we were able to confirm changes API pricing, context limits, model availability or deprecation schedules inside this window. If you are planning work that depends on a new model landing this week, plan as though it will not.

The one entry worth a calendar note is Thursday afternoon. If you make capacity or budget decisions that assume compute keeps getting cheaper and more plentiful, the Applied Materials call is the week's clearest scheduled opportunity to check that assumption against someone with a view further up the supply chain.
