The week ahead: Apple on Wednesday, Oracle and NVIDIA on Thursday

The first three days of September produced three frontier model releases: Anthropic shipped Claude Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 on the 1st, Google released Gemini 3.8 Flash on the 2nd, and OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra on the 3rd. The week that follows has nothing of that kind on the calendar. What it has is three events with a publicly confirmed date, and two of them are about who is paying for the compute those models run on.

Wednesday 9 September: Apple's event

Apple's events page carries a single line about it: "Surprise and shine. Watch a special Apple Event on 9/9 at 10 a.m. PT." That is the entirety of what Apple has confirmed — a date, a time and a tagline. The keynote streams from apple.com and the Apple TV app.

Everything circulating about the product lineup is press expectation rather than announcement, so we are leaving it out. The question that can actually be answered on Wednesday is narrower: whether the Siri rebuild Apple introduced at WWDC on 8 June — described on that same page as "new Siri AI powered by Apple Intelligence" — gets a shipping date, and how much on-device model capacity the new hardware carries. Those two answers, if they come, are the ones that change anything for people building on Apple platforms.

Thursday 10 September: NVIDIA at Goldman Sachs

NVIDIA said on 27 August that it will present at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference on Thursday 10 September at 8:50 a.m. PT, with a live audio webcast at investor.nvidia.com and a replay available for 90 days. NVIDIA published no topic and no speaker. An investor conference is not a product event, and nothing here is a launch.

It is worth the calendar entry for context rather than news. NVIDIA reported second-quarter revenue of $96.2 billion on 26 August, up 106% year over year, with $89.0 billion of it from data center, and guided to $108.0 billion for the current quarter while assuming no data center compute revenue from China. Communacopia is where that trajectory gets questioned without a script in front of it.

Thursday 10 September: Oracle's first quarter

Oracle releases first-quarter fiscal 2027 results after the close on Thursday, with a conference call at 4:00 p.m. Central. The company has already published what it expects: total revenue growth of 27% to 29%, cloud revenue growth of 58% to 64% in dollars, and non-GAAP earnings per share between $1.72 and $1.76 — guidance issued alongside its fourth-quarter results on 10 June.

The line that matters for AI is remaining performance obligations. Oracle closed fiscal 2026 with RPO of $638 billion, up $85 billion in a single quarter from $553 billion, and said most of that increase came from large-scale AI contracts in which the customer either prepaid for the GPUs or supplied them outright — a prepaid and customer-supplied hardware component Oracle put at $75 billion. Set against that, fiscal 2026 free cash flow was negative $23.7 billion, and Oracle said it expects to raise roughly $40 billion in fiscal 2027 through a mix of debt and equity while issuing no additional debt in calendar 2026.

Thursday is the first quarterly checkpoint on whether that backlog converts into revenue on the schedule the guidance assumes. If you run workloads on OCI, or price inference against it, the disclosure is more informative than the headline number.

Nothing retires this week

For developers, the useful fact about this window is a negative one. Microsoft's Foundry model retirement schedule, last updated on 2 September, lists no retirement at all between 6 and 12 September. The nearest are MAI-Transcribe-1 in preview on 15 September, one gpt-realtime-mini version on 21 September, and the 24 June snapshot of gpt-chat-latest on 24 September.

Anthropic's deprecation page has nothing dated inside the window either. Its nearest entry is Claude Sonnet 4.5, listed as retiring "not sooner than September 29, 2026" — a floor rather than a commitment. Nothing breaks this week. The migrations worth queueing are the ones landing in the fortnight after it.

What is not on the calendar

No lab has published a date for a model release inside this window, and we are not going to fill that space with expectation. The next dated event on the frontier-lab calendar is OpenAI DevDay, on Tuesday 29 September in San Francisco; in-person applications have closed and the opening keynote will be livestreamed.

That leaves the week's real risk where it usually sits: with what has no date attached. Safety disclosures, incident reports, litigation filings and regulatory reaction arrive when they arrive. A quiet calendar is not a promise of a quiet week — it only means nothing was announced in advance.
